The Samsung Galaxy Tablet

Samsung has confirm that an Android-based tablet would be leaving its labs sometime next month. Given that the IFA show is but a few weeks out, it's halfway logical to think that Samsung would be letting some of its launch partners know of its intentions. There's no price or actual release date accompanying the mention, but it may be a sign that a 3G-enabled version could be coming to the UK following an official unveiling in Berlin next month.

It had already been mooted that Samsung's 7-inch Android-based tablet (to be known as the Galaxy Tab) would be released sometime in the third quarter of this year. According to South Korea's JoongAng Daily, an unnamed "high-ranking official" at Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Tab will be officially unveiled at IFA, which starts on September 3rd in Berlin. There are no more details beyond that, but previous reports have suggest that the Galaxy Tab will match its smartphone counterpart with an AMOLED display, and ship with some decent specifications across the board, including Android 2.2, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 16GB of on-board memory, and both WiFi and 3G connectivity.

Samsung Tablet

Samsung Galaxy Tablet Samsung's 7-inch Tab has certainly got everyone's attention as another possible anti-iPad tablet. So far, Samsung's only word is that its Galaxy Tab will launch in Q3 without supplying much in the way of detail other than this picture tweeted (and then pulled)from Samsung's official Twitter account in South Africa. Since then we've seen unofficial specs that include Android 2.2, a 7-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz A8 processor, 4,000mAH battery, 370-gram weight, and 16GB of on-board memory with up to 32GB of microSD expansion.

Further reports of the Galaxy Tab have emerged describing the same four-button device we saw in the video yesterday. The "sturdy and well-built" tablet was "very thin," described as around the same thickness as an iPhone. The report says that the P1000 model is correct and that it will feature "full phone functionality" albeit minus a dedicated sound slot on the bezel. For audio, you'll have to rely on a Bluetooth headset or the P1000's speaker. Which is a relief, the last thing anyone wants to see is someone yelling into a 7-inch tablet welded to the side of their head, just like the old days. There's a front-facing camera for video calling and a 3.2 megapixel camera at the back for shooting pictures and video. Admittedly, 3.2 megapixels seems a touch on the stingy side for the notoriously pixel greedy Samsung. Along with Bluetooth, we're told that the Galaxy Tab will also feature WiFi and 3G data, a standard SIM slot, and can connect over USB or WiFi. And the battery can't be removed and the version in the report had a 6x4 icon layout and seemed to be running stock Android 2.2 Froyo?
